Beginning the day with a glass of lemon-infused water has become similar to a religious ritual for many looking to lose weight quick.
But dietitians say the water won’t magically help you drop pounds. In fact, no beverage is the silver bullet for slimming down especially diet soda. But there are some drinks that, joined with a healthy lifestyle, can give your weight-loss attempts a boost. Below are three to start drinking.
Call it nature’s perfect energy drink. Research uncovers consuming two to three cups of coffee before an exercise can stimulate you to work out harder and longer than you would if you went to the gym caffeine-free. You also burn more calories. One study found that exercisers could do almost 20 percent more reps on a leg press machine when they fueled with Java. Always remember to drink it black or add a little no calorie extract, since mixing cream and sugar is the quickest way to undo the benefits of your coffee-fueled extended workout.
Not only is green tea calorie free, but it can also help push fat burn and weight loss. In one research, members who drank four cups of green tea every day for two months lost six extra pounds than those who drank just plain water, according to a study written in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. In 2013 another report from the European Journal of Nutrition found that daily green tea drinkers weigh less, have smaller waists, and receive these green tea health benefits. Select a fresh, hot brewed tea with nothing added because store-bought bottled drinks tend to have fewer antioxidants and can be packed with extra sugar. Also, stay away from unregulated green tea supplements, they’re a common cause of liver damage and may contain dangerous doses of compounds isolated from tea.
Trade the squeeze of lemon for a handful of ice. Cold drinks help your body to consume more energy to maintain its preferred 98.6-degree temperature. This means drinking three 24-ounce servings of ice water regular can help your body burn up to 100 additional calories, says Mitzi Dulan, R.D., nutritionist for the Kansas City Royals and author of The Pinterest Diet. Do it daily and you could lose up to 10 pounds over the course of a year.
